Biography

Dr. Paul E. Kaloostian, M.D., F.A.A.N.S., is a health sciences assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine and a neurosurgeon with UCR Health and at Riverside Community Hospital.

Kaloostian attended UC Riverside as an undergraduate and participated in the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences, receiving his M.D. from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then attended the University of New Mexico Medical Center for a residency in neurosurgery and has completed fellowships in minimally invasive spinal surgery, complex spine and spinal oncology.

He has served as an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center and was an attending neurosurgeon with Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles.

He has served as a reviewer with multiple peer-reviewed neurosurgical scientific journals and is a member of the editorial board of more than 10 scientific peer-reviewed journals. and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific book chapters. In addition, he is the author of more than 13 books as well as "The Young Neurosurgeon: Lessons from My Patients" which describes the lifesaving feats and failures that are part of neurosurgery in the 21st century.

He serves on multiple national and local committees involved in improving health care nationwide and is actively involved in teaching students and residents.

Kaloostian is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons as well as a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

He is fluent in English, Spanish and Armenian.

Research Interests

Kaloostian has an interest in open and minimally invasive spinal surgery and general neurosurgery with focus on complex spine and spinal oncology. He is also involved in medical care health policy.
