Biography

Dr. Raul Ruiz, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.P. is on leave from the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine while serving as congressman for the 36th District of California.

Prior to his election, Ruiz served as the senior associate dean for community engagement and partnerships and was assistant clinical professor for emergency medicine.

As associate dean, he helped to lead and develop initiatives and projects involving community stakeholders in health care, education and non-profit sections and assisted in developing pathway programs aimed at preparing Inland Southern California students for admission to medical schools. In that role he assisted with the implementation and oversight of several university pipeline programs, including the Future Physician Leaders program.

Ruiz is founder and director of the Coachella Valley Healthcare Initiative, a community-centered effort to develop a regional plan to improve health care access and wellness in areas with severe physician shortages and large populations without health coverage. He also served as a board member of Volunteers in Medicine.

Ruiz attended UCLA for his undergraduate degree, then earned M.D., master's of public health and master's of public policy degrees from Harvard University. He was a physician and instructor in emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School's Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Awards

  • Person of the Year, Desert Magazine, 2011.
  • Humanitarian of the Year, San Gorgonio Pass Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce, 2010.
  • Commanders Award for Public Service from the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne for his medical response activities following the earthquake in Haiti, 2010.
  • Influential Latino of the Year, Inland Empire Hispanic Image Awards, 2009.
