Biography

Dr. Kumar Venkat, M.D., F.R.C.P., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.R, is an associate clinical professor of internal medicine for the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, specializing in the diagnosis and management of complex autoimmune diseases in adult rheumatology.

Venkat earned his M.D. and M.B.B.S. from the University of Madras in Chennai, India. He later completed his residency in internal medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine followed by a clinical and research fellowship in rheumatology at the Henry Ford Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Michigan.

He is a diplomate of the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and a diplomate of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He is a member of the International Association of Rheumatology, a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, and an emeritus member of the American College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Indian Medical Association of Southern California.

Venkat is a recent retiree from Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, where he was the regional coordinating chief of rheumatology as well as a specialist in rheumatology at the  Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers in Anaheim and Irvine. While at Kaiser Permanente, Venkat was closely involved in teaching medical students and residents in family medicine and internal medicine, serving as a co-director of the Internal medicine Residency Program. He later moved to Orange County and continued to be part of the teaching faculty for residents in internal medicine  and family practice.

His non-medical interests include music, photography,reading and travel.

Research Interests

His research has centered round the study of synovium, bone and cartilage interface in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Other topics of interest include nutraceuticals , development of treatment guidelines, cost effective utilization of medicines and laboratory tests in rheumatologic practice and development of teaching curriculum in rheumatology for residents in primary care.
