Biography

Kathy Barton is the assistant dean for the Office of Strategic Initiatives and the chief of staff to the dean of the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine. She is one of the founding staff members and played a substantial role in the launch of the UC's sixth medical school.

Barton's responsibilities include developing and executing strategies in the areas of: executive consultation and strategic planning, extramural funding and philanthropic development, communications and marketing, and special events and projects. She works with senior leadership to set priorities and execute strategies for community engagement.In addition, she leads the Strategic Initiatives unit.

Barton joined UC Riverside in 1985 and has held a variety of communications, grant-writing, and government relations positions at the university, including as the director of technology collaboration in the UCR Office of Governmental & Community Relations.

In 2012, Barton was selected in a system-wide search to become the ninth staff advisor to the University of California Regents, serving one year as staff advisor-designate and the second year as staff advisor. She was the first staff member from UCR to ever hold this position. Barton is also a former president of the UC Riverside Staff Assembly and served as a delegate to the systemwide Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA).

In her free time, Barton enjoys bicycling and continues to remain active in the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce.
